How to select a drill rig

Parameters that determine the model and drilling method

Hole diameter and depth

Each rig is rated for a specific diameter range. Depth determines power requirements and rod system configuration.

Rock type and hardness

Rock strength determines the drilling method: percussive (top hammer, DTH) or rotary. Soft and hard rock require different tooling.

Drilling direction

Vertical, inclined, horizontal holes — rig technical capabilities differ accordingly.

Mobility and site conditions

Crawler or wheeled undercarriage, bench operation capability, drift width for underground rigs.

Required productivity

Metres per shift, number of holes, planned work intensity — these determine the rig class.

Frequently asked questions about drill rigs

We answer common questions when selecting drilling equipment

How do I select a drill rig for a quarry?
Selection is based on several parameters: required hole diameter, rock type, drilling depth and required productivity in metres per shift. Based on this data, a Wayland Armenia engineer will recommend the right rig class — surface top hammer (SmartROC, PowerROC, FlexiROC) or DTH for hard rock. Describe your application in the form and we'll make the selection.
Which drill rig is needed for blast hole drilling?
For surface blast hole drilling, Epiroc crawler rigs are used: SmartROC, PowerROC or FlexiROC — depending on hole diameter and rock hardness. For softer rock, top hammer percussion is effective; for hard rock — DTH (down-the-hole hammer). The specific model is selected based on your quarry parameters.
What is the difference between surface and underground drilling?
Surface rigs operate in open-pit quarries — large machines with powerful compressors, capable of working on benches. Underground rigs have a low profile, short wheelbase, and are designed for drifts and tunnels. The applications are fundamentally different: surface rigs for blast holes and exploration, underground rigs for drift development and production drilling.
How do I select a rig for my rock type?
In soft to medium rock (UCS 40–100 MPa), top hammer percussion is efficient — high penetration rates, lower air consumption. In hard and abrasive rock (UCS 100–200 MPa), DTH is optimal — better penetration in hard formations, improved hole straightness. For very soft rock and soil — rotary drilling. The specific tooling selection requires geotechnical data review by an engineer.
Can a rig be ordered for a specific project?
Yes. Epiroc offers wide configuration options for each product line: hole diameter range, compressor type, rod length, power, undercarriage. We support configuration selection for specific geotechnical conditions of your site. Provide your hole specifications and rock data — we'll configure accordingly.
Is Epiroc service available in Armenia?
Yes. Wayland Armenia is an official Epiroc partner with certified service personnel. Planned maintenance per manufacturer schedules, field service 24/7 across Armenia, stock of genuine parts and consumable drill tooling in Yerevan. We operate on sites in Kapan, Goris, Meghri and other remote locations.
How do I select a rig for exploration drilling?
For geological exploration, key parameters are: hole diameter and depth, drilling method (core drilling with sample recovery or rotary), and mobility — moving between drill points is often required. Epiroc offers specialised exploration rigs in the CS and Explorac series. Tell us about your geological programme — we'll recommend the right option.
