The Key Barrier to Electrification: Runtime Through the Working Shift

Electric equipment is being adopted at an increasing rate on construction, quarrying and mining sites. Electric excavators, wheel loaders and haul trucks are already operating at real sites around the world. Yet one challenge continues to limit their widespread use: how to keep machines charged through a shift, especially on remote or temporary sites where permanent grid connection is unavailable or not economically viable.

The FCS 220-240 is Atlas Copco's answer to this challenge. The station moves to the machine — not the other way around.

FCS 220-240 Technical Specifications

The station combines a 232 kWh energy storage system with an output of up to 220 kW DC in standalone mode and an auxiliary 50 kW AC output. It supports simultaneous charging of two machines, automatically splitting the available DC power equally between them. When only one machine is connected, the full available power is directed to it.

Atlas Copco FCS 220-240 on a construction site. The station is towed by a standard vehicle and requires no special site preparation.

Key Features

Charge-to-recharge. The station can simultaneously charge equipment and replenish its own battery — from a grid connection, EV charging infrastructure or a generator. This helps minimise downtime even at sites without permanent grid access.

Dynamic Load Management. The system automatically balances load between machine charging and auxiliary site power. The AC output has the highest priority: when total available power is limited, the system reduces DC charging to maintain a stable supply to critical equipment.

Multi-level access control. RFID authentication allows operators to define user permissions — from basic start/stop to full system configuration. This simplifies management of multiple contractors on site and fleet access control for rental companies.

Remote monitoring and OCPP support. The station supports two-way data communication, enabling remote monitoring of operational data. The open OCPP interface allows integration with payment systems and fleet management platforms of the operator's choice.

Where the FCS 220-240 Can Be Used

The mobile format makes the FCS 220-240 particularly useful where establishing permanent charging infrastructure is impractical or uneconomical:

Construction and road works. Temporary sites where the working area shifts as the project progresses — road construction, tunnelling, infrastructure projects. The station moves with the equipment.

Quarrying and mining. Open-pit quarries and underground mines where grid access may be limited and mining equipment operates in remote working faces. The FCS 220-240 can be used in combination with diesel generators to support continuous charging.

Tunnel construction. Enclosed working environments where reducing emissions and noise is particularly important — a mobile charging station can support electric equipment without permanent cable runs.

Remote and temporary sites. Any location where permanent grid connection is absent or not yet established.
